Overland has been updated!

I know, a shocker. First comic since I've switched to doing things by hand...it's not perfect, but I'm going to work hard to get better at it! Updates will be kinda slow this month because I'm actually working on a mini Overland comic to sell at a comic event...wish me luck on that, I have a little less than a month to finish everything up!

Toooones.

Lol Japanese.

I like it much better now that I've added tones to it. Not sure why. But doing tones by hand sure is fun. Started seriously working on the next Overland page, but...I think I may have to start over. I was doing it on the computer to save time, but I seriously enjoy doing things by hand now, so I might try to redo the page by hand. We'll see. Either way, Overland should be updating soon! If you cared to know, anyway.

Finally.

Bought a new scanner today, finally. It's great and light! Though I ended up giving in and getting an A4 scanner--oh well, there's always scanning in parts, I guess.

Anyway, with a scanner, now I can show you the random stuff I've worked on on and off over the past few months. Not that impressive, but I'm learning. I particularly like toning by hand--will try to do that with at least some of the Overland pages.

More art behind the cut~ )

Overland updated, for those who are interested.

About a week before my departure for Japan. I'm starting to feel a bit scared, as this is my first job ever and my first time living alone and my first...for a lot of things. I'm sure things will work out, but I can't help feeling anxious because that's just how I am.

In other news, I'm considering translating Overland in Japanese so a few of my friends in Japan can read it--and to practice a bit. Might be too lazy though, haha.

And in more unrelated news, I think I've fallen in love with the idea of getting a ScanSnap s300m. I've never even considered non-flatbed scanners! It's so portable and adorable, I'm seriously thinking of getting one while I'm in Tokyo at the beginning of next month. S-so cute.

So lately I've been having fun figuring out how characters in Overland would speak in Japanese. Sometime in the future I'm going to work on a short one-shot Overland comic to show to an editor in Japan (not for any big career purposes obviously, just for a portfolio review since it's possible to make appointments and since I'll be in Japan why not)

In any case, figuring this out is kind of fun because if there's one thing I love about Japanese it's the really different ways people can talk (I once considered referring to myself as "boku" until I realized that that was dumb and people would probably think I'm just incapable of speaking anyway). I figure Ari would use "boku" because he's polite (and I just...can't see him as an "ore" user), though in general he's probably a pretty casual speaker when he's not talking to higher-ups. Viktor is definitely "watashi", and would probably speak very politely, but in that...uh, faux/threatening polite way that you tend to see a lot (慇懃無礼, I think? Bitingly polite). Sophia is clearly "watakushi", and super polite. She was probably the easiest to figure out. Lily is another "watashi" ("atashi"?), but I can't figure out if she's polite or not when speaking generally (though the more I think of it, the more it seems she'd be pretty casual since she's an excitable kid).

Nagi (she appears in chapter 2, though I've drawn her...once, I think?) is a "boku" user and speaks casually. Noir (also in chapter 2, and yes, he's the same Noir from Cursed Blessings) is casual and uses "ore"...and I think that's it for the important characters so far. Not like any of this is really important in the long run, but I was bored and it made for amusing thoughts.

So, uh, Overland has finally updated. This page took stupidly long to finish because I was so distracted by Persona 4/New York to do anything worth anything, but as soooon as I left everything was fine lol. In any case, I'm hoping to do a page a week for a while, especially since I'll be busy with moving to Japan very soon. We'll see how everything works out.

Harry Potter 6 in a few days! Woo! Now I get to see the two scenes my cousin is in, haha.

...I'm not sure why I've never drawn Viktor in a top-hat before. It just makes so much sense.

My first picture on my new computer (incidentally, it's named Ari and its harddrive is Lily since I'm a dork like that). :D I'm feeling a bit more settled, so I finally sat myself down to do a more complete picture. I've been doing little noncommittal sketches here and there for the past week, but it wasn't until now that I felt like I could do a bit more...whew. It's good, since I need to get started on Overland again soon.

Still wish I had a better place to draw though, ugh my back...

Thanks everyone for your feedback on my last post- it was very helpful and I'm feeling really pumped up for chapter 2 of Overland. XD I've been working on the outline for Chapter 2 (which I will use when making the script/name) and after I finish that I'm going to jump into doing the groundwork for the chapter keeping a lot of things in mind. This probably means that there might be a bit of time (I'm hoping to use this month to do it all) in between now and when Chapter 2 starts, but I'm a bit reluctant to put a sign saying "hiatus" up on the comic since it's not really a hiatus as much as it's just me taking time to cover all my bases.

T-though...I'm acting like I don't have that 25 page paper hanging over my shoulder plus the 30 pages of fiction I need to have done by early May...but I will persevere! Dammit!

Let's just all hope I can get a job too. D:

Today we went to downtown DC to see the Sakura Matsuri (bleh), and view the plethora of sakura trees in bloom in the capital (yay!). I took...a lot more pictures than I intended to. Now I'm all nostalgic for Kyoto again. :(

OH U

Uh. So...I hope people realize that if I ever do a Overland doujin it will totally be ridiculous gag and not, um...sexy times between Viktor and Ari. Though admittedly I can see where people are coming from, and considering Ari and Viktor's relationship in terms of the entire story (which obviously hasn't been revealed yet) this will only add fuel to the fire but...no. D:

Because when I think porn + Overland I break into uncontrollable giggles because hahaha what.

Also! Comic Recommendation!
Gunnerkrigg Court. I wouldn't be surprised if most of you already knew about this and I'm just late to the game, but I was recently introduced to GC by [livejournal.com profile] mortalysis and I'm hooked. The story is told so well, and the art has gotten so good as of lately. You should definitely check it out, it's really an engaging story (I could totally see this is a cartoon or really awesome movie). Can't wait to see where the story takes us from here.

On today's very special episode of Overland...

And this is why I don't think I can ever really draw BL.

In other news, there is now a character page and a link page. Amazing?!

Victory!

I have a buttload of memes to do but for now I just what to say...
I finished Chapter 1 of Overland! Last time I did this...I think I was still working on Target!. (oh wait, j/k, I totally finished the first chapter of Elliot two years ago so never mind...) So yay for actually finishing something! Now I need to finish up the script for Chapter 2 and get started on that. I'm excited, since things actually happen in this chapter (and Nagi is introduced! Though only for a second...). ♥

But for now, I'm going to continue chilling in Phoenix and enjoying the weather. :D

So yeah...

By the way, if anyone on the flist is still interested in the Overland contest, the deadline is this Sunday which I...probably should have mentioned a while ago.

Oh god, I fail at contests. D:

Man, all I want to do is draw the next page but I totally keep on getting cockblocked by schoolwork/job searching/absolute despair (the antispirals have WON! Yes, I did throw a GL reference there because I'm awesome)...uuuugh. I guess it'll just have to be this Friday, or something.

2nd update to Overland this week! I only feel like mentioning this because finally, finally Lily has been introduced. At the end of the chapter. Serves me right for drawing the chapter title page before I solidified the script. D:

Since it's a few pages before Chapter 1's end, I've been thinking about how this first chapter has developed and I have to say, I'm pretty happy with myself. Not particularly because this chapter is awesome or anything (it's a bit slow, the humor's sporadic, the backgrounds really need to be tightened up...there are a lot of things that could be improved) but because this is the first time I've actually planned a chapter and more or less finished it. Every other time before I just sort of...decided that a chapter was done just because it seemed that way. I don't know, it feels like I succeeded at organizing myself a little this time around, and my product really improved because I did so. And most of all, doing Overland has continuously been fun--I'm glad it's staying that way. :)

...and all of this reminds me, I have to finish the script for Chapter 2 soon. D: And make a character page. And stop sucking at hands, for goodness sakes, at this point it's unacceptable how bad I am at them. At least I'm getting more comfortable with backgrounds, I guess.

Oh hay, I just realized that maybe I should make a public post about this on my journal, haha.

So everyone, if you don't know already my webcomic Overland, is having an epic contest! The current deadline is February 13th but I may be changing that in the future, I'm not sure yet. But if you're interested I'd love for you to enter! You, yes you, might even appear in the comic! Who would want to miss that up?? No one, that's who.

So check it out my friends!

Overland has been updated.

I usually don't post update notices to this journal but I figured, hey, it's the first comic page (or really, art) that I've done in ages so why not. I'm still struggling but hopefully I'll get back to drawing regularly soon. It's as much a block (I have plenty of ideas I want to draw) as it is this weird feeling of being completely lost when I start to draw. I don't know what to make of it- I've never felt this way before.

I realized that I haven't yet pimped this out public on this journal so this is for those of you who not on the flist~

What could these guys be talking about?? Why Overland, of course! It's my ultra special new webcomic which you, of course, should check out. I mean, it's awesome, why wouldn't you? HUH? >(

I mean what other genius piece of work would contain doors with eyes, imps, cute little girls who haven't shown up yet *points at the picture*, and potential love-interests with eyepatches who also haven't shown up yet?

You should totally check it out, it'll rock your world.

Ridiculous sales pitching aside, I'm having a lot of fun doing this comic and I think (and hope!) it's showing in the pages. ♥ There are 7 pages of the story up so far (with some filler stuff inbetween), and the comic as of right now updates on Monday and Wednesday with what I like to call as Freebie Fridays on Fridays which is a catchy way of saying I do filler stuff on Fridays.

And just your luck, Viktor (I finally settled on that being his name after pondering for waaay too long) has made his first appearance (of a sort) with today's update!

I won't be talking that much about Overland (aside from the silly in-progress picture and such) on this journal, so if you want to keep up with it, just check the site out~

Right now I have him pegged down as Victor, but I'm not sure about it...what do name do you think he looks like?
