Be thankful for their lax-ness!
My parents are a little less than unsupportive about my "artist phase" ... okay, I exagerrate. But they're not really into me focusing on art. At all. In their mind art = starvation, so you know. -_- et ptu.

Oh, I definately am thankful for that fact! Fact is, art doesn't HAVE to be about starvation (even though I joke about being a hobo often, haha)...and generalizing it to that simple point really discredits a lot of artists' achievements, I think.
